The Klezmer Festival in Safed is a beloved, long-running musical and cultural event that draws thousands of visitors from across Israel and around the world every year. Klezmer, a Jewish musical style that developed in Ashkenazi communities of Eastern Europe, is known for its lively rhythms and soulful melodies blending folk and dance influences. When and Where – Klezmer Festival 2026
The 39th International Klezmer Festival in Safed will take place August 18–20, 2026 (5–7 Elul 5786), from 19:00 to 23:00 each evening, throughout the Old City. All festival performances are free of charge. Due to street closures for pedestrian traffic between 16:00–23:00, vehicle access will be restricted on Yerushalayim Street, HaAliyah B Street and Arlozorov Street; visitors are encouraged to arrive on foot or plan alternate routes. Recommended parking is available at the Saraya, Shuk, HaMichlala, HaChan HaAdom, Keren Hayesod and Tzahal Street lots.
Festival Stages
The festival spans roughly 20 performance locations across the Old City, including:
- Main Stage – "Roots of the Melody", Ma'ayan HaRadum Square – featuring Gabriel Shuraki & Friends with special guest David D'Or (Aug 18), HaLev VeHaMa'ayan Band with Bar Zvirin (Aug 19), and Gershon Leizerson with the Israeli Klezmer Orchestra featuring Yishai Lapidot (Aug 20)
- Klezmer Sounds Stage – Bank Hapoalim Plaza, Yerushalayim Street
- ASHTAM Stage – Beit Yosef Street
- Spirit of the Soul Stage – General Exhibition grounds
- Rising Sounds Stage – Municipality Square, hosted by Michael Gaisinsky
- Roving street performances and a traveling klezmer parade along Yerushalayim and Arlozorov Streets, featuring acts such as HaKlezmeria, the Yalla Ensemble, Tapliztky Klezmer, Ita and Dov Zilberman, and more
Dozens of Israeli and international artists and ensembles perform at the 2026 festival, including Eira Goifield, the Tel Aviv Saxophone Quartet, Daniel Ahaviel, Pavel Levin, HaBalkania, Emil Aybinder, Chanan Bar Sela, and bands from Ukraine, Moldova and Russia such as Chokorlia, Blaksea Swing, and the Jerusalem Keytlin Band.
Special Tours & Shows – "Spirit of Safed"
The "Spirit of Safed" program offers a musical walking tour through the Old City alleys at 11:00, as well as a roaming klezmer performance led by Miel at 16:30 — both free of charge.
