The origin of the citadel is likely the "Fortress of Safaf" built by Josephus (66–67 CE), although no archaeological evidence has yet confirmed this. In 1102, the Crusaders built a fortress on the site, which was later captured by Saladin, rebuilt in 1240, and subsequently passed into the hands of Baibars of Egypt, the Ottomans, Napoleon, the British, and was finally captured on the night of Safed's liberation.
